Gemutlichkeit
Germans in Polk Place Emphasis on Warmheartedness
By Bill Dean
The Ledger
Fingers whir about the accordion like inner workings of a Bavarian
clock. And as Horst Max makes it sing, he encourages 27 delighted
young faces to join in.
"Sing it together!" he says, as a feeling of youthful gemŸtlichkeit,
or good fellowship, wafts over Lakeland's Montessori Preschool a
week before Christmas.
The refrains of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Freres Jacques"
and "Old MacDonald" fill the room as Max's hands work their magic on
the instrument.
And on his monthly visit to the preschool, he plays it in front of
the colorful mural he painted on the wall and near the computer he
uses to teach skills to the students.
